About Redwing Blue Grass Band - October 6, 2009 by pkfrizzell

Redwing has been a staple on the Bay Area Bluegrass scene since the band formed 5 years ago (2004?) and has played regularly at the Freight & Salvage, Jupiter, McGrath’s, Berkeley Spice of Life Festival and even a stint at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. Loaded with veterans of the local bluegrass and old time bands, Redwing boasts soaring harmonies and fancy picking on traditional and original tunes. Redwing has formed a unique sound – mixing elements of country, bluegrass, folk and old-time music into a delectable music smorgasbord.

With Bob Johnson on Dobro and Polly Frizzell on Fiddle, the line up is bolstered by the vocal interplay of Alan Dreyfuss (guitar), and Rick “Red” Horlick (Mandolin.) rounding out the band is bass journeyman Olivier Zyngier. Redwing’s music runs the gamut from tender ballads to layered instrumentals, and their audiences are never disappointed. Redwing is inspired by many different musical styles and artists and is sure to show its audiences its genuine love of playing music.

The duet harmonies of Rick “Red” Horlick and Alan Dreyfuss are a big part of the band’s appeal. They deliver Louvin Brothers / Lily Brothers style vocals that really grab your attention. Both Horlick and Dreyfuss deliver excellent lead vocals on various songs and well, with Alan’s favoring old-timey delivery and Rick leaning towards the blues/bluegrass style. Fiddler Polly Frizzell contributes a third voice on the Horlick /Dreyfuss stack to good effect as well.

Considerable care has gone into the instrumental work too. Lacking a banjo to lend the traditional bluegrass “drive,” the songs are propelled by a mix of imaginative chops from the guitar, mandolin, Dobro, bass and fiddle. Bob Johnson’s Dobro often bookends the tunes. At times he swaps the Dobro for a National Baritone guitar. Dreyfuss’ guitar stays steady and tasteful and the interplay between that and Campbell’s deft bass playing provides the bedrock upon which the other instruments can contribute. Frizzell, Johnson, Horlick all manage to mix up styles and attacks to keep things interesting and serve to mood of piece perfectly. Polly even swaps her fiddle out for a voila for a special touch on a few songs. They swing easily from tender waltzes to a very hard-driving “Kentucky Mandolin.”

The bands choice of materials is a nice mix of standards and obscure gems, which create a unique and exciting sound.
